Buenos Aires and its neighborhoods
Microcentro and Center of Buenos Aires
The so-called Microcentro of Buenos Aires is the key point
of the town. We find there the most important banks and companies.
During the week the streets of the Microcenter are very buisy.
The Avenida 9 Julio is one of the widest avenues of the world
and separates the Microcenter from the Center. The Obelisque
stands right at the cross of the most important avenues of
Buenos Aires: the Avenida 9 de Julio and the Avenida Corrientes.
In the Avenida Corrientes you find book shops, theaters, cinemas,
which keeps walking the people until late in the night.
Palermo
In only a few years Palermo became one of the most fashionable
places of Buenos Aires. It consists of Palermo Hollywood,
Soho, Palermo Chico (Small Palermo) and Palermo Viejo (Old
Palermo). Palermo Hollywood got its name for the presence
of different TV channels. In Palermo Soho latest fashion and
design objects are sold in the shops.
At daytime these places don't differ a lot from other ones
in Buenos Aires. There is the usual bar at the corner, the
fruit shop, the supermarket managed by a Chinese family. But
in the evening the people and the ambient change completely.
It became fashionable to renovate the typical old huge houses
of Buenos Aires and convert them into meeting places, bars,
restaurants. Mentioning only a few of them, there is the Taller,
right at the Plaza Serrano, where you can join readings, jazz
concerts or the Esculapio para un Gallo, which today is a
cultural centre with cinema, bar and restaurant.
San Telmo
San Telmo is the Tango place par excellence. It is one
of the oldest quarters of Buenos Aires and was called originally
Altos de San Pedro. You find a great number of historical
buildings and churches there. And also the Viejo Almacén,
which is a traditional place of Tango.
Despite of the large number of tourists visiting San Telmo,
you can still find the authentic of this place, which are
very old bars, the market, the Milonga-bars. On weekends Porteños
as well as tourists visit the big market along the Calle Defensa,
which is supposed to be one of the oldest streets of Buenos
Aires.
Retiro
Immigration and emigration is of great importance to the Republic
Argentina.
The immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century first
came to the Hotel of the immigrants, stayed there for about
5 days while trying to find a place to live.
The immigrants received a first lecture on the customs and
the language of Argentina. In the Museum of the Immigration,
located in the former Hotel of the Immigration the era of
the big immigration to Argentina is presented.
The crisis in 2001 with the dismissal of President De la Rúa
effected another big emigration wave in the Argentinian history.
La Boca
La Boca is marked by two important constructions:
the futball pit and the former harbour. In the middle of the
way you find the well-known touristic attraction "El
Caminito" with its typical colorful houses.
La Boca is name of the place, where the Tango was born, where
the first people of Buenos Aires lived. The first immigrants
were mainly Italians, from the region of Genua. They came
during the great immigration wave during 1860 and 1910 and
remained in La Boca.
It was always a poor place until today, where strong social
conflicts concerns the people living normally there. On the
other hand the ecological problems, namely the little river
Riachuelo, need a strong economic inversion.
